Dental Alginate Grades Explained: Universal vs. High Precision vs. Super High Precision
Which alginate grade for which clinical case? A clear comparison of universal, high precision and super high precision alginate — specs and applications.

One Material, Three Grades
Distributors are often asked: "Which alginate should I stock?" The answer depends on the clinic's cases. Here is the practical breakdown.
UNIVERSAL TYPE — THE VOLUME SELLER
- Detail reproduction: 20 μm
- Compressive strength: >0.5 MPa
- Elastic recovery: 97%
- Use for: general porcelain restorations, jaw impressions, study and orthodontic models
The everyday workhorse. If you stock one grade, stock this one.
HIGH PRECISION TYPE — FOR FINE DETAIL WORK
- Detail reproduction: 20 μm
- Compressive strength: >0.55 MPa
- Permanent deformation: 15%
- Use for: porcelain tooth impressions where edge definition determines fit
SUPER HIGH PRECISION TYPE — THE SPECIALIST'S GRADE
- Detail reproduction: 20 μm
- Compressive strength: >0.6 MPa
- Elastic recovery: 98%
- Use for: high-precision local injection impressions and fine prosthetic detail
HOW TO ADVISE YOUR CUSTOMERS
General practices and dental colleges → Universal. Prosthodontic labs and premium clinics → High Precision. Specialists doing injection techniques → Super High Precision.
All three grades share the same chromatic color guidance and 3-year shelf life, so inventory management stays simple: one storage condition (below 25°C, dry), one mixing protocol.
