From Impression to Cast: The Complete Alginate Workflow

A practical alginate workflow: dosing, mixing, tray loading, setting and pouring. Universal dental alginate sets in about 3 minutes; Life Casting in about 4 minutes. Follow the product-specific IFU.

Why the Workflow Matters
A repeatable alginate workflow starts with the correct product, measured dosing and the supplied instructions. Universal dental alginate and external life casting material have different uses and setting times. Confirm the selected formulation before use.
STEP 1 — DOSE
Universal dental: 10g powder to 20ml water (1:2). Life casting: 100g powder to 300–400ml water (1:3 to 1:4). Measure powder and water using the method and measuring tools specified in the supplied IFU.
STEP 2 — MIX
Use the water temperature and mixing method specified for the selected formulation. For Universal dental alginate, the reference mixing time is approximately 30 seconds. Do not automatically apply dental mixing instructions to Life Casting material. Blend to a homogeneous consistency within the stated working time.
STEP 3 — LOAD AND SEAT
For dental impressions, distribute alginate evenly across the tray’s material-bearing area, then seat and hold it within the specified working time. Keep the handle clean. For external life casting, prepare the container and position before mixing. Follow product-specific instructions.
STEP 4 — SET
Universal dental alginate: approximately 3 minutes total setting time. Life Casting: approximately 4 minutes setting time. Faster-setting formulations can be adjusted to customer requirements. Working time and setting time are different; follow the supplied IFU and do not rely on color alone.
STEP 5 — POUR AND FINISH
Follow the supplied instructions for removal, disinfection where applicable, and the permitted time before pouring. Plan the next step in advance. Do not assume every formulation allows the same storage or delayed-pour window.
COMMON FAILURES AND FIXES
  • Grainy or weak material: check dosing, water temperature and mixing against the supplied IFU before blaming the powder.
  • Distorted detail: early removal or movement during set — wait for full set.
  • Unexpected setting speed: check the formulation, water temperature and elapsed time. Discuss faster-setting requirements before ordering.
